| On March 22, the department (along with members from Avenel Fire Department) held training on response to rail emergencies on the NJ transit line that passes through the district. The three hour course was given by Tim Meade, a Senior Training Specialist for rail safety, emergency response and preparedness of NJ Transit. Topics covered included an overview of the rail system, safety awareness, hazards, railway equipment and the features and hazards of the train cars and locomotives. Members were instructed on what to do in the event of a rail emergency, including how to safely secure a train (shutting down the locomotive, securing power), emergency ingress and egress, and how to respond to derailments and accidents. In the fall, the department will conduct hands on emergency response training on actual NJ transit trains at one of their facilities. |
